Selected for Kobe City’s “OPEN NEXUS KOBE” Co-Creation Project

Turning Kobe’s Waste into a Hydrogen Resource: Working with Local Companies Toward Local Hydrogen Production and Consumption

BIOTECHWORKS-H2 Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya, Tokyo; Representative Director, CEO & Founder: Akihide Nishikawa; hereinafter “BTW-H2”) has been selected as one of four host companies from the Tokyo metropolitan area for “OPEN NEXUS KOBE,” a co-creation project organized by Kobe City. Under the theme “Turning Kobe’s Waste into a Hydrogen Resource through Green Transformation (GX) Co-Creation,” BTW-H2 is seeking co-creation partners among companies based in Kobe.

OPEN NEXUS KOBE promotes new business creation and regional collaboration through partnerships between companies in Kobe and the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Background: Why Turn Kobe’s Waste into a Hydrogen Resource Now?

Kobe’s manufacturing industries, including shipbuilding, steel and machinery, generate waste plastics and organic waste. Much of this waste is difficult to recycle and has traditionally been incinerated and treated as a disposal cost. Through an integrated scheme that converts waste into fuel, uses it as energy and records CO2 emission reductions, BTW-H2 takes a unified approach to waste management, energy use and CO2 reduction.

Seeking Co-Creation Partners

We welcome proposals from companies of all sizes with a head office or business location in Kobe. These include factories and businesses facing waste disposal challenges, companies seeking to use their own waste as an energy resource, and businesses involved in hydrogen, plant engineering, waste collection and transportation.

Message from Akihide Nishikawa, Representative Director, CEO & Founder of BIOTECHWORKS-H2

“Having been born and raised along the Hanshin railway line in Osaka, Kobe has always felt close to home, and it remains a city I visit frequently. This makes our selection especially meaningful to me. We are already engaged in various discussions with Hyogo Prefecture, and I hope this project will help accelerate those efforts and enable us to contribute to Kobe as a hydrogen city. We can begin with demonstration projects or feasibility studies, and we look forward to hearing from companies in Kobe.”
