Waste-to-Hydrogen Production Feasibility Study Project in Malaysia Receives Grant Approval under METI’s FY2025 Supplementary Budget Subsidy Program for Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Projects (Small-Scale Demonstration and FS* Projects)

Grant approval received on October 19, 2026. Waste-to-hydrogen feasibility study gets fully underway in Malaysia

BIOTECHWORKS-H2 Co., Ltd. announces that its Waste-to-Hydrogen Production Feasibility Study Project in Malaysia received grant approval on October 19, 2026, under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s (METI) FY2025 Supplementary Budget Subsidy Program for Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Projects (Small-Scale Demonstration and FS Projects).

The approved project aims to assess the feasibility of commercializing hydrogen production from municipal waste in Malaysia from technical, economic, and regulatory perspectives. Through strategic collaboration with local partners, it will also examine the feasibility of a “three-pillar hydrogen” plant configuration based on solar energy, biomass, and waste-derived sources.

■Grant Approval and Launch of the Feasibility Study

BIOTECHWORKS-H2 launched its feasibility study after receiving grant approval on October 19, 2026, under METI’s FY2025 Supplementary Budget Subsidy Program for Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Projects (Small-Scale Demonstration and FS Projects). The project is one of 65 selected from 238 applications.

■Background: Why Waste-to-Hydrogen in Malaysia Now?

Countries across the Global South face the challenge of balancing energy security with decarbonization, and domestic clean hydrogen production is becoming a national priority. BTW-H2 addresses two challenges—reducing growing volumes of waste and supplying clean hydrogen—through a single approach: producing hydrogen from mixed waste without sorting.

■Comment from Akihide Nishikawa, Representative Director, CEO & Founder, BIOTECHWORKS-H2 Co., Ltd.

“Producing hydrogen from waste is a business that many companies have attempted, only to encounter significant obstacles. Since our founding, we have conducted demonstrations to take on these challenges. We have now finally reached the feasibility study stage. While we have already confirmed the technical feasibility of converting waste into hydrogen through PoC*, this feasibility study will assess the potential for commercialization in Malaysia from technical, economic, and regulatory perspectives as we continue working toward implementation. This is more than a study; it is an effort to make the project a reality. Please stay tuned for BTW-H2’s future developments.”
